This and other useful stats from HosterStats.com
A few months ago I was introduced to HosterStats.com, a web site with a wealth of domain name data. The statistic in the headline of this post is somewhat surprising, but you’ll find it right here in HosterStats’ cross domain comparison.
Over 1.4 million domain names that are registered in .net aren’t registered in .com. Over 20% of domains registered in .org aren’t registered in .com. Think about all the errant traffic this sends to their non-existent .com counterparts.
Another interesting data bank on HosterStats is the domain counts by TLD by month. ICANN releases the official counts each month, but three months in arrears. HosterStats data is more recent and relevant. For example, the site spotted that .asia dropped below 200,000 registrations last week.
In case you were wondering, when it comes to the last three letters of a domain name, the most common letters are ing.

I wonder how the percentages have changed since domain tasting virtually ended.
Andrew Allemann says
@ Elliot – good question. You would think that all of these .com’s would have been tasted had .nets been registered.

Thanks for the mention Andrew.
@Elliot I would have to do a crunch of the zones from the domain tasting period to be sure but .ORG stopped tasting before .COM and .NET. I did a check of domains deleted since 2000 and not reregistered in April and it worked out to about 130 million domains (over com/net/org/biz/info/mobi/asia). There is a natural attrition rate for all TLDs but there is a very interesting com/ccTLD pattern that is emerging. DEnic mentioned a few years ago that about 11% of its domains have their equivalent in .COM TLD. Businesses registering their ccTLD domain will also try to register the .com version if it is available. The stats for 2007 would be the best for comparison as this would be when domain tasting was peaking. I’ll dig out the zones later this week and do a crunch for comparison.

Or… The .coms were being tasted, which is why the .nets were registered and kept.
IrishDomainer says
And how do we get hold of the .com data?
Nghia says
I think the number of .asia names out there will continue to drop in the next few month. I believe this because .asia landrush started two years ago with minimum 2 years registration. A lot of good names are coming loose, names folks paid good money for during the landrush auctions. Now is a good time to pick up generic .asia names at rock bottom prices.
